2024 Elections: IEA Seeks Collaboration with Parties for Presidential Debate
- IEA sets up committee for 2024 Presidential debates.
- NDC initially declines to participate.
- IEA engages with parties to encourage participation.
- Debates to proceed regardless of party participation.
The Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) has established a nine-member committee to oversee the organization of the 2024 Presidential and Vice Presidential debates. Dr. Humphery Ayim-Darke, a member of the committee, has assured that they will engage with political parties and candidates to ensure full participation in the debates.
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) had previously announced that it would not participate in the debate, citing a lack of prior engagement. However, Dr. Ayim-Darke indicated that discussions are ongoing to encourage all qualified candidates to partake in the debate.
Dr. Ayim-Darke stated that the IEA is engaging with political parties and believes that all qualified candidates will participate. He emphasized that the IEA has a history of conducting successful debates, even when some political parties declined to participate.
Dr. Ayim-Darke noted that the IEA will proceed with the debates, even if some parties do not participate, as it is essential for candidates to be questioned by citizens on their governance plans. The IEA believes that candidates who want to govern must be willing to subject themselves to scrutiny from citizens.
Dr. Ayim-Darke assured that the IEA’s doors are still open for further engagement with political parties. The IEA is committed to ensuring that the debates are successful and provide a platform for citizens to engage with candidates on their plans for the country’s future.
