Rev Dr Kwabena Opuni-Frimpong, Executive Director of Alliance for Christian Advocacy Africa, has made a passionate appeal to Johnson Asiedu Nketia, National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), to commit to peace by signing the peace pact ahead of the December polls.

This appeal comes after Mr Nketia set forth specific conditions that the party insists must be met before considering signing the Peace Pact advocated by the National Peace Council. The National Peace Council has been advocating for the Peace Pact in anticipation of the December 7 elections, but Mr Nketia expressed skepticism about its effectiveness, citing past experiences.

During the 2020 elections, eight NDC members were allegedly killed by national security operatives without accountability, leading to Mr Nketia’s reservations about the Peace Pact. On August 20, Mr Nketia met with the National Peace Council at the NDC headquarters and detailed certain conditions for the NDC’s participation in the Peace Pact.

One of the conditions is the full implementation of the recommendations from the investigation into the violence during the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election. Rev Dr Opuni-Frimpong urged Mr Nketia to reconsider his stance, emphasizing the importance of committing to peace.

He pleaded with Mr Nketia to recognize the value of democratic culture, which includes accepting election results and using legal processes to address grievances. Rev Dr Opuni-Frimpong stressed that the essence of the peace pact is to prevent street mobilization and ensure a peaceful electoral process. By signing the peace pact, Mr Nketia would be demonstrating his commitment to a peaceful and democratic process, which is essential for the country’s stability and growth.
