Gunmen opened fire on a school bus in Pakistan’s eastern Punjab province, killing two children and wounding five others.
The attack occurred Thursday morning as children were traveling to school in a village in Attock district.
Police believe the assailants targeted the driver, who was also wounded. Local officials and media reports indicate the children were as young as five.
Police investigations suggest the attack may be related to a family feud.
However, they are also considering the possibility of terrorism.
Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi condemned the attack and ordered the best possible medical treatment for the wounded.
Attock district is located near Pakistan’s restive northwest, where attacks by armed groups have increased in recent years.
In 2014, a Taliban attack on a military-run school killed nearly 150 children.
In 2012, another Taliban attack on a school bus wounded Malala Yousafzai, the future Nobel Peace Prize laureate.
