Ghana Gears Up for Starlink Launch
- Ghana is on track to launch Elon Musk's Starlink internet service
- The launch will take palce at the end of August 2024
- This positions Starlink as a potential game-changer
Ghana is on track to launch Elon Musk’s Starlink internet service by the end of August 2024.
This follows the National Communications Authority (NCA) granting Starlink the necessary licenses to operate in the country.
Previously, Ghanaians accessed Starlink through a black market workaround, subscribing to the global roaming service.
Starlink utilizes a network of low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellites, offering faster internet speeds compared to traditional options.
This positions Starlink as a potential game-changer in Ghana’s internet landscape.
With over 5,800 LEO satellites in operation as of April 2024, Starlink boasts efficient signal relay and download speeds exceeding 100 Mbps in some areas.
However, the high cost of Starlink may be a barrier to entry for many Ghanaians. In neighboring Nigeria, Starlink’s monthly subscription reaches $27, with an additional $314 setup fee.
This significantly outpaces local providers like Airtel, which offers 1GB of data for just $0.68.
While Starlink offers significant potential for underserved rural areas with limited internet access, its cost might limit its adoption among this very population.
As the launch nears, it remains to be seen how Starlink will impact Ghana’s internet landscape. Affordability will be a key factor, especially in regions desperately needing reliable connectivity.
