A tragic incident has occurred in Lagos, where a 58-year-old man has died following a 19-day dry fast. The man, whose name has not been released, was reportedly undertaking this intense spiritual practice when he passed away.

The information was confirmed by Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, on Tuesday.

The death took place in the Alagbado area of Lagos on Monday morning around 6:00 a.m. According to Hundeyin, the man’s younger brother reported the death to the Alagbado Police Division later that same day, around 7:00 p.m.

The younger brother, who also chose not to disclose his identity, stated that the deceased had been engaged in a prolonged dry fast, abstaining from all food and water for 19 days.

This extreme form of fasting is often undertaken for spiritual or religious reasons.

SP Hundeyin reported that initial investigations revealed no signs of foul play. The authorities have not found any evidence to suggest that the death was due to anything other than the fasting practice itself.

Hundeyin further stated that the family has requested permission to proceed with the burial of the deceased. This request has been honored, and arrangements for the funeral are now underway.

The case highlights the potential dangers associated with extreme fasting practices, particularly those involving prolonged abstention from all sustenance. Such practices can pose serious health risks and should be approached with caution.

While the community mourns the loss, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of seeking medical advice and ensuring safety when undertaking significant fasting or other rigorous spiritual practices.

The police have concluded their initial investigation and will continue to monitor the situation as required.
