Hollywood stars Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck are set to divorce following two years of marriage. According to court documents obtained by the BBC, Lopez filed for divorce on Tuesday in the Los Angeles County Superior Court.
Lopez and Affleck, popularly known as “Bennifer,” first married in a small ceremony in Las Vegas in July 2022, followed by a larger celebration in Georgia the next month. Their relationship began when they met on the set of the 2003 film Gigli. They had planned to marry in 2003 but ended their engagement early in 2004. Nearly two decades later, they rekindled their romance.
“Love is beautiful. Love is kind. And it turns out love is patient. Twenty years patient,” Lopez remarked in 2022 upon announcing their Las Vegas wedding.
The BBC has reached out to the representatives of Lopez and Affleck for comments on the situation.
In the court filing, it is noted that Lopez or her attorney must provide Affleck with a copy of the divorce petition. The petition does not mention details of a prenuptial agreement.
According to the filing, both Lopez, 55, and Affleck, 52, are required to disclose their financial information, including income, expenses, properties, and debts. They must also report any financial changes until a final agreement is reached on financial matters. Lopez has 60 days to submit her financial disclosure, after which Affleck will have an additional 60 days to provide his own information. Failure to comply with these requirements could result in court-imposed sanctions.
Speculation about the couple’s relationship had been ongoing, with reports of them listing their Beverly Hills mansion for $65 million (£50 million) and being seen separately without their wedding rings.
Affleck, a two-time Oscar winner, was previously married to Jennifer Garner, whom he met on the set of the 2001 film Pearl Harbor. They divorced in 2015 after ten years of marriage and have three children together.
Lopez, known as J.Lo, has been married four times: to Cuban-born waiter Ojani Noa from 1997 to 1998, to her former backup dancer Cris Judd from 2001 to 2003, and to singer Marc Anthony, with whom she had twins, from 2004 to 2014. She was also engaged to New York Yankees star Alex Rodriguez.
