GUTA to Formalize Agreements with Political Parties to Protect Trader Interests
- GUTA is seeking to actively contribute to the development of political party manifestos
- GUTA President, highlighted the association's commitment
- GUTA has raised concerns about the economic difficulties faced by its members
The Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA) is set to enter into Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with all major political parties in advance of the upcoming elections.
This initiative aims to ensure the protection of its members’ interests and to hold political parties accountable for their promises if they come into power.
In an interview, GUTA President Dr. Joseph Obeng revealed that this election cycle marks a significant shift from past practices.
Unlike previous elections, where GUTA would only review party manifestos after their completion, the association is now seeking to influence the development of these manifestos directly.
Dr. Obeng emphasized the importance of these agreements, stating that GUTA intends to ensure that future governments adhere to their commitments as outlined in the MoUs.
“We are very serious about this so that we are not taken for granted and can hold the government accountable if it fails to meet its obligations,” he explained.
GUTA has also highlighted ongoing economic challenges affecting its members, such as the depreciation of the cedi and increased freight charges from Asia.
The association has called on the government to maintain the economic progress achieved since returning to the IMF, stressing the need for continued economic stability.
Dr. Obeng further stressed the importance of formalizing these agreements for enhanced accountability, stating, “We need to ensure that our input is reflected in the manifestos and that there is a formal commitment that can be referred to later.”
GUTA’s proactive approach underscores its dedication to ensuring that traders’ concerns are integral to the policymaking process and that their interests are well-represented in the upcoming political landscape.
