The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has commenced the administration of practical and theory papers for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination for School Candidates, 2024, starting on Monday, August 19, 2024. This follows the successful administration of the Visual Art Project work from August 5 to 16, 2024. The examination is scheduled to end on Friday, September 20, 2024.
A total of 460,611 candidates, comprising 212,954 males and 247,657 females, from 1,003 schools have registered for the examination. This represents a 2.66% increase from the 2023 entry figure of 448,674. The examination is taking place at 1,000 centres across the country, with WAEC ensuring that all necessary test security measures are in place to guarantee a successful examination.
However, WAEC has expressed concern over grand schemes by some institutions to engage in mass cheating during the examination. Intelligence gathered indicates that some candidates are being charged between Gh¢200.00 and Gh¢500.00 to receive assistance from invigilators. Additionally, supervisors at some centres plan to assign teachers to invigilate subjects they teach, while some schools have registered persons who are not their bona fide students.
WAEC has cautioned all Heads of School, Supervisors, and Invigilators to desist from such practices, warning that those involved will face consequences according to the rules and regulations of the examination. The Council has also solicited the support of all stakeholders, especially supervisors and invigilators, in safeguarding the integrity of the examination. Candidates are advised to adhere to the rules and regulations and be wary of rogue website operators who circulate fake questions.
WAEC has assured all stakeholders and members of the public that it is committed to conducting a successful examination. The Council wishes all candidates success in their papers and reminds them that they can pass their examination without cheating. By taking these measures, WAEC aims to maintain the integrity and credibility of the West African Senior School Certificate Examination, ensuring that candidates’ results reflect their true abilities and hard work.
