The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has renewed its challenge for John Dramani Mahama, the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) flag bearer, to engage in a debate with Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
The party asserts that such a debate is the only way for the opposition to reveal any inconsistencies in Bawumia’s positions.
During the launch of the NPP’s manifesto at the Ghana Secondary Technical School (GSTS) in Takoradi on Sunday, August 18, 2024, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Leader of the Majority in Parliament, stated that avoiding a debate would suggest that the NDC itself is inconsistent and untrustworthy.
He urged Mahama to take up the debate challenge if he truly believes that Dr. Bawumia’s vision is flawed.
Afenyo-Markin also addressed claims of arrogance directed at Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, Bawumia’s running mate. He dismissed these allegations, recalling that similar criticisms were once leveled against then-candidate Akufo-Addo, which did not diminish his effectiveness.
Afenyo-Markin highlighted Dr. Opoku Prempeh’s significant contributions, particularly in implementing the Free SHS program, and expressed confidence in his ability to support Bawumia in transforming Ghana’s economy.
The manifesto launch was attended by thousands of NPP supporters and followed a significant health walk in Sekondi-Takoradi on August 17, 2024.
The event’s planning was overseen by an eleven-member committee led by Oboshie Sai-Coffie with Abena Asante serving as Secretary, as announced in a statement from NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong on August 5, 2024.
