Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential candidate, has pledged to eliminate the controversial E-Levy and betting tax if elected in the 2024 elections.
Speaking at the launch of the party’s manifesto in Takoradi on August 18, Bawumia promised sweeping tax reforms aimed at reducing the financial burden on Ghanaians.
These reforms include a one-time tax amnesty for past tax liabilities, along with waivers on interest and penalties for unfiled taxes.
Bawumia detailed his vision for transforming Ghana into a leading digital economy, emphasizing the need for new policies, competitive incentives, and strategic investments in local talent and tech startups.
He proposed a significant overhaul of the tax system, including consolidating various levies into a single VAT line item to eliminate the current cascading effect and reducing Withholding Tax for small-scale gold exports to curb smuggling. Additionally, he reiterated his commitment to abolishing the Betting Tax.
