A police sniper played a crucial role in neutralizing the threat posed by Donald Trump’s would-be assassin, Thomas Matthew Crooks, during a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on July 13, 2024
After Crooks opened fire, a Butler County Emergency Services Unit officer shot at him, causing him to recoil and pause.
This brief interruption gave a Secret Service counter-sniper the opportunity to fatally shoot Crooks.
The incident led to increased security measures around Trump, including the reassignment of some Secret Service agents from President Joe Biden’s detail to Trump’s.
Trump will also receive bulletproof glass protection for outdoor rallies.
The FBI is investigating the incident, and the director of the Secret Service, Kimberly Cheatle, resigned following criticism of security lapses and her congressional testimony.
