Ipswich Town has made a significant splash in the transfer market ahead of their long-awaited return to the Premier League.
The Tractor Boys have secured the signings of Championship Golden Boot winner Sammie Szmodics from Blackburn Rovers and England international Kalvin Phillips on loan from Manchester City.
Szmodics, who netted an impressive 27 goals in the second tier last season, joins Ipswich on a four-year deal for a reported fee of £9 million plus add-ons.
The Republic of Ireland forward has long harbored ambitions of playing in the Premier League and expressed his excitement about joining the club.
Phillips, meanwhile, arrives at Ipswich on a season-long loan from Manchester City.
The 28-year-old midfielder has struggled for consistent playing time since his high-profile move from Leeds United two years ago.
He spent the second half of last season on loan at West Ham United in an attempt to secure a place in England’s Euro 2024 squad, but his hopes were dashed by a combination of poor form and injury.
Phillips is eager to rediscover his best form at Ipswich and contribute to the team’s success in the Premier League. “I’m thrilled to be here and can’t wait to get started,” he said. “My goal is to play as much football as possible, enjoy myself, and help the team win games.”
Ipswich manager Kieran McKenna expressed his delight at securing the signings of Szmodics and Phillips. “Both players are incredibly talented and experienced,” McKenna said. “They will be invaluable additions to our squad as we prepare for the challenges of the Premier League.”
