Tottenham Hotspur has announced the suspension of midfielder Yves Bissouma for their upcoming Premier League match against Leicester City.
The decision follows the circulation of a video on social media showing the 27-year-old inhaling nitrous oxide, commonly known as laughing gas.
Bissouma has since expressed regret for his actions, acknowledging a “severe lack of judgment.” However, the club has taken a firm stance, citing the recent criminalization of recreational nitrous oxide use in the United Kingdom.
Possession of the substance can now result in a prison sentence of up to two years.
Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou confirmed the suspension, emphasizing the need for trust-building between Bissouma and both the club and his teammates. “He’s going to have to work hard to win that back,” Postecoglou stated.
The incident occurred after Bissouma played 45 minutes in Tottenham’s friendly match against Bayern Munich.
The midfielder joined the club from Brighton for £30 million in 2022.
