The family of Bismark Awatey Kabutey, a 37-year-old man who was viciously murdered by a mob in Teshie, Greater Accra Region, is demanding justice.

The tragic event took place on July 28, 2024, following a wedding and birthday celebration.

Bismark Awatey Kabutey, from Aboa-Lower in the Yilo Krobo Municipality of the Eastern Region, had attended a wedding in Madina and subsequently joined a birthday party in Teshie with his friend, Junior.

Reports indicate that the violence erupted late that night as Kabutey and Junior were heading home. Junior, a witness to the attack, described the harrowing scene.

“Bismark was intoxicated, so a friend arranged a taxi for us. During the ride, there was a disagreement between Bismark and the driver. The driver abruptly stopped the car and began shouting ‘Thief! Thief! Thief!’ A crowd quickly assembled, armed with stones, clubs, and other weapons. They began assaulting Bismark without asking any questions,” Junior recounted.

Despite Junior’s frantic attempts to clarify their situation and plead for mercy, the mob ignored his entreaties. “I knelt and begged them, but they refused to listen and even started attacking me. I had to flee through the back of a building to save myself,” Junior added.

After escaping, Junior could not find Kabutey. The following day, he learned that Kabutey’s body had been discovered in Accra and taken to the Police Hospital Mortuary.

A formal complaint has been filed with the Teshie Police.

Kabutey’s family is calling for a thorough investigation into his death and justice for their loved one. “We are devastated and in disbelief. Our brother went out to celebrate and never came home. He was not a thief. We need justice for Bismark,” a family spokesperson stated.

Previously, Bismark was a goalkeeper who left the sport after his aspirations did not materialize. He had been working on a farm in his village to support his family.
