Mahama Warns of Unqualified Personnel in Security Forces

- Mahama emphasized the need for basic literacy among security personnel
Former President John Dramani Mahama has accused the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) of politicizing and undermining the recruitment process for security agencies.
According to Mahama, the current government has compromised the standards, resulting in the hiring of individuals who are not adequately qualified.
Mahama expressed concern over the inclusion of personnel in various security services, including the police, who lack basic literacy skills.
He labeled this situation as a serious threat to national security and questioned why individuals without fundamental reading and writing abilities are being recruited.
These remarks were made during an event at the Bukom Arena, where Mahama was responding to a young person’s inquiry about opportunities for those eager to join the security services but lacking necessary qualifications.
In his response, Mahama stressed the importance of having basic literacy for individuals seeking positions in the security sector. He assured that alternative livelihoods would be offered to those who do not meet these basic requirements.
Mahama attributed the issue partly to high unemployment rates, which he believes push many young people to apply for security positions despite lacking the necessary qualifications.
He criticized the NPP for removing qualification requirements, which he claims has led to situations where some police officers are unable to perform essential duties, such as managing station records.
