“NPP Members Don’t Understand Ideology, They Just Don’t Like Rawlings” – A Plus

Independent Parliamentary Candidate for Gomoa Central, Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as A Plus, has made bold claims about the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in a recent interview on Daybreak Hitz.

A Plus alleged that NPP members are primarily individuals who opposed former President Jerry John Rawlings, rather than adhering to the party’s ideology. He stated, “Rawlings supported Action Chapel, he supported Archbishop Agyinasare’s church… he wanted to sanitise and clean the system, but people rather saw him as an antichrist.”

He further explained that most pastors, particularly in Kumasi, are NPP members who opposed Rawlings’ efforts to curb excessive spending on events like funerals. “Rawlings did not want you to spend so much money on funerals… All these people came together against Rawlings. So all these pastors, majority of them are NPP and it is not because they understand the ideology, no they just don’t like Rawlings.”

A Plus also claimed that many NPP members’ parents were thieves, and Rawlings’ efforts to address this led to widespread opposition. “I grew up looking up to Rawlings… Rawlings was a strong Nkrumahist and anybody who believes in Kwame Nkrumah is someone I also admire.”

He acknowledged Rawlings’ imperfections but praised his charisma and influence. “Rawlings was the only person who could tell everybody in Ghana to sleep and everybody will sleep… He had the opportunity to do a lot but at a point he was tired.”
