The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has issued a strong warning against any efforts by President Nana Addo Akufo-Addo to retain power, should they secure victory in the December 7 elections.
Mustapha Gbande, Deputy General Secretary for Operations of the NDC, asserted the party’s readiness to take firm action if necessary, stating, “We will detain Nana Akufo-Addo like a fowl and compel him to relinquish power to the NDC.”
In an interview, Mr. Gbande emphasized that elections should reflect the people’s will. If the voters decide that they have had enough of the current administration’s difficulties, the President must be prepared to step down.
Gbande stressed that elections should be governed by the law, not by any underhanded tactics. He warned that any attempts by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to undermine the electoral process by transferring power to Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia would face strong resistance from the NDC.
He also criticized Bryan Acheampong, the Minister for Food and Agriculture, for his recent controversial remarks suggesting the NPP would win the elections “by all means possible.”
mR. Gbande deemed these comments irresponsible and urged President Akufo-Addo to take action to ensure a smooth transition after the December 7 polls.
Mr. Gbande dismissed Acheampong’s statements, suggesting that those who make grandiose claims often have nothing substantial to offer and warned that such rhetoric could disrupt societal peace.
He implied that President Akufo-Addo might only refuse to hand over power if he has something to conceal.
Mr. Gbande assured that the NDC would be vigilant and ready to respond to any attempts to undermine the electoral process, warning that failure to address these issues could compel the party to take further defensive measures.
