The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has clarified that incidents of over-billing in Ketu South are due to expired meters and recent tariff hikes. Residents of Ketu South Municipality in the Volta Region recently protested against what they described as unacceptable billing practices by ECG.
The protesters claimed that the billing practices had caused significant psychological distress and financial burdens. Similar allegations of over-billing have been made by ECG customers in other parts of the country.
During a Public Accounts Committee meeting, Member of Parliament for Ketu South, Abla Dzifa Gomashie, raised concerns about the issue. Gomashie cited examples of small households receiving high electricity bills, which she believed was due to a problem with the new billing system.
Managing Director of ECG, Samuel Dubik Mahama, responded that expired meters could be the cause of the problem. Mahama explained that meters have a limited lifespan and expire, which is not the fault of the customer.
He emphasized the need for education and awareness about meter expiration. Mahama also noted that the recent 75% tariff increase by the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) should be considered in the context of the issue.
