In light of a notable rise in Monkeypox (Mpox) cases since early 2024, health authorities in Ghana are enhancing their monitoring systems.
The virus is now reaching countries that had previously been unaffected, raising concerns across Africa.
The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that 15 African nations are currently facing outbreaks, with 2,030 confirmed cases and 13 deaths this year.
Dr. Franklin Asiedu Bekoe, Director of Public Health at the Ghana Health Service, stressed the importance of public awareness regarding the virus.
“It is crucial to raise awareness so that individuals with rashes do not mistakenly assume it is chickenpox. It is important to visit a health facility for proper testing and confirmation,” he advised.
Dr. Bekoe reassured that the Mpox cases in Ghana are not severe and are manageable.
He also highlighted ongoing efforts to improve coordination between regional and national health authorities to better address the outbreak.
