The Korle Bu Teaching Hospital’s Dialysis Centre is set to resume full operation this week after a temporary closure. The closure had left renal patients in a state of uncertainty, but the hospital has assured them that services will return to normal soon.
The delay in delivery of essential consumables from the Tema Port led to the closure, but the Ghana Revenue Authority and Ghana Supply Company are now providing emergency support to expedite clearance. Procedural lapses and documentation issues caused the delay, but the hospital expects to clear the supplies and resume full operations early next week.
In the meantime, some patients were dialyzed at the National Cardiothoracic Centre of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital. The hospital apologized for the inconvenience and assured patients that proactive measures have been taken to prevent future shortages.
To improve service delivery and cost efficiency, the Minister of Health has procured 30 additional dialysis machines with a year’s supply of consumables for Korle Bu. The new machines will allow the hospital to access essential consumables from the open market at competitive prices.
The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) CEO, Dr. Aboagye Dacosta, clarified that the closure was not due to non-payment by the NHIA, but rather internal issues at Korle Bu. Dr. Dacosta emphasized that facilities that submitted claims on the dialysis platform have received their payments, and urged the public to seek clarity from Korle Bu’s leadership.
