Former President John Dramani Mahama has made a passionate appeal to the government to settle the long-standing arrears owed to trainee nurses across the country. During a meeting with some trainee nurses on Saturday, Mahama highlighted the dire situation faced by these students, who have been struggling to make ends meet due to unpaid arrears.
Mahama emphasized that the government’s failure to pay these arrears has resulted in immense hardship for the trainee nurses, many of whom have been forced to go without their allowances for almost 30 months. He noted that some trainee nurses have already completed their studies without receiving their due allowances, while others are on the verge of graduating without any payment in sight.
Mahama urged the government to prioritize the payment of these arrears as a matter of urgency, stressing that it is their responsibility to ensure that these students receive the financial support they deserve. He expressed concern that the government’s inaction has not only affected the well-being of the trainee nurses but also threatens to undermine the country’s healthcare system.
Mahama assured the trainee nurses that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is committed to creating jobs and improving the livelihoods of Ghanaians, including healthcare professionals. He promised that if the NDC returns to power, they will make a concerted effort to employ as many trainee nurses as possible, providing them with the opportunity to contribute to the country’s healthcare system.
Mahama’s call to action comes at a time when the trainee nurses are facing unprecedented challenges, including financial hardship and uncertainty about their future. By speaking out on their behalf, Mahama has brought attention to the plight of these dedicated students and highlighted the need for urgent action to address their concerns.
