The Ministry of Health in Ghana has launched a new strategic plan for nursing and midwifery, aiming to enhance healthcare services in the country. The Nursing and Midwifery Strategic Plan and Services Framework 2024-2028 was unveiled in Accra, Ghana’s capital, on August 8, 2024.
The launch ceremony was held under the theme “Sustaining the gains to accelerate the achievement of Universal Health Coverage.” Deputy Minister of Health Alexander Akwasi Acquah represented the Minister for Health, Dr. Okoe-Boye, at the event.
Acquah emphasized the government’s commitment to building on the progress made in the previous strategic plan (2019-2023) to achieve quality healthcare for all Ghanaians. The new strategic plan outlines a comprehensive roadmap for the development of nursing and midwifery professions in Ghana.
It addresses current challenges faced by nurses and midwives, setting ambitious goals for professional advancement. The plan focuses on critical areas, including education, job creation, service delivery, leadership, data governance, research, innovations, partnerships, and collaboration.
These focus areas align with the World Health Organization’s strategic directions, tailored to Ghana’s specific needs based on an end-of-cycle evaluation of the previous strategic plan. The initiative aims to empower nurses and midwives, curb brain drain, and advance their professional work, ultimately contributing to achieving Universal Health Coverage in Ghana.
