Tunisian President Replaces Prime Minister With New Appointment

Story Highlights
  • Saied has removed Prime Minister Hachani from office
  • Maddouri, the Minister of Social Affairs, has been appointed
  • The government attributes these issues to a severe drought

Tunisian President Kais Saied has removed Prime Minister Ahmed Hachani from office after a year in the position.

Kamel Maddouri, the Minister of Social Affairs, has been appointed as the new Prime Minister.

Hachani had highlighted the government’s achievements in a video message just before his dismissal, despite challenges related to high food and energy prices and widespread water and electricity outages.

The government attributes these issues to a severe drought, which has led to water rationing.

However, President Saied has suggested that the water shortages are part of a conspiracy ahead of the presidential election, claiming that the dams are actually full.

Saied has announced his intention to run for re-election in October, which has been met with opposition from various groups who accuse him of suppressing and intimidating rivals.
