Bagbin Calls Parliament to Session on September 3

- Alban Bagbin has announced that Parliament will reconvene on Tuesday
- Several bills listed in the request were still under committee review
- Bagbin highlighted practical challenges
Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has announced that Parliament will reconvene on Tuesday, September 3, 2024.
This decision follows a request from Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin for an urgent recall to address pressing government matters.
In his statement on Wednesday, August 7, Speaker Bagbin explained that after reviewing the request, he determined it did not meet the criteria outlined in Article 112 of the Constitution.
Many of the issues mentioned, including the $250 million IDA financing agreement, had already been discussed and rejected before the Parliament’s adjournment on July 30, 2024.
Bagbin further noted that several bills listed in the request were still under committee review and that even members of the Majority side were reluctant to address the same issues.
The Speaker pointed out that while Article 112 (1) of the Constitution allows him to designate where parliamentary business is conducted, practical issues such as the condition of the Accra International Conference Centre and the unavailability of the Parliamentary Chamber posed significant challenges.
He emphasized the need to consider logistical and preparatory factors and announced that Parliament would meet on September 3, 2024, at a location to be confirmed later.
Bagbin assured that this decision aligns with his commitment to uphold democratic principles and good governance.
