  • Emphasizes need to tackle corruption within own administration.

John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has emphasized the need for the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) to operate independently without government interference. During a media interaction in Bolgatanga, Mahama expressed concerns about perceived government meddling in the OSP’s affairs, which he believes hinders its effectiveness.

Mahama highlighted the critical role of the OSP in investigating and prosecuting corruption and other criminal activities, emphasizing its importance in maintaining accountability. He pledged his commitment to allowing the OSP to operate freely in his next administration, ensuring that it can carry out its duties without political influence.

Mahama criticized the current government for allegedly fighting the OSP and interfering with its work, citing the resignation of former Special Prosecutor Martin Amidu as an example. He emphasized that the OSP should be left to work independently, without political pressure or interference, to ensure a genuine fight against corruption.

Mahama acknowledged that investigating and prosecuting corruption within one’s own regime is a greater challenge than investigating political opponents. He stressed that his administration would prioritize the fight against corruption, allowing the OSP to investigate and deal with cases without political interference.

Mahama’s commitment to an independent OSP aims to restore trust in the institution and ensure that it can effectively combat corruption. By allowing the OSP to operate freely, Mahama hopes to demonstrate his administration’s dedication to transparency and accountability.
