Ernest Kofi Owusu-Bempah, Deputy Director of Communications for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has called for action against the creators of the contentious Agyapadie document.
In a statement issued on August 6, 2024, Owusu-Bempah urged Inspector General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, to apprehend those responsible for the document.
Owusu-Bempah argued that while Chapter 5, Article 21 of the 1992 Constitution ensures freedom of speech and press, both the 1960 Criminal Offenses Act (Act 29) and the Electronic Communications Act 2008 (Act 775) stipulate penalties for false publications that threaten public order or safety.
He emphasized the need for a thorough investigation into the Agyapadie document and called for the prosecution of its publishers in accordance with the Criminal Offenses Act.
He criticized Awake News and its collaborators for repeatedly disseminating false information without facing consequences.
Owusu-Bempah insisted that the Agyapadie document, which features prominent figures like the Okyenhene and President Nana Akufo-Addo, should be addressed decisively to prevent further misinformation.
He urged Dr. Dampare to act swiftly and bring the perpetrators to justice, asserting that such actions are crucial to maintaining order and accountability.
President Akufo-Addo had previously addressed the document’s rumors on August 1, 2024, dismissing its content as entirely fictional.
