Mahama Accuses Akufo-Addo of Causing Diplomatic Rift with Burkina Faso

John Mahama, flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has accused President Akufo-Addo of creating diplomatic tension with neighboring Burkina Faso. Mahama made this statement during a press conference on Wednesday, August 7, 2024, referencing Akufo-Addo’s 2022 comments at the US-Africa Leaders Summit in Washington.

Akufo-Addo had alleged that Burkina Faso hired Russian mercenaries and entered into an agreement with the Wagner Forces, causing tension between the two nations. Mahama emphasized the need to resolve this tension, stating that the next NDC government will address the issues with Burkina Faso.

He criticized Akufo-Addo’s comments, describing them as “konkonsa” (gossip) about a neighboring country. Mahama noted that Akufo-Addo’s apology for his comments was insufficient and that the tension remains.

He pledged to strengthen Ghana’s relationship with Burkina Faso and work together to prevent the crisis in Burkina Faso from affecting Ghana. Mahama highlighted Ghana’s role as host of the anti-terrorism strategy initiative in the sub-region and the need for collaboration with Burkina Faso.

He emphasized the importance of quenching the “fire” in Burkina Faso to prevent it from spreading to Ghana. Mahama’s comments underscore the need for diplomatic efforts to resolve the tension and strengthen regional cooperation.
