The Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council has announced plans to install 25,000 solar-powered street lights across the region in the near future. This initiative aims to address the long-standing issue of poor visibility on many roads at night, which has been a major concern for motorists and residents.
Regional Minister Daniel Nii Kwartei Titus Glover revealed the plans at a recent regional town hall meeting, emphasizing the importance of improved lighting in curbing crime. According to Titus Glover, criminals prefer to operate in the shadows, making visibility a key factor in preventing criminal activity.
The installation of street lights is part of a broader effort to enhance security in the region. By illuminating key areas, the government hopes to deter criminal activity and create a safer environment for citizens.
This is not the first phase of the street light installation project. In 2022, 10,000 street lights were distributed across the region, marking the beginning of the initiative. An additional 20,000 street lights were installed in 2023, bringing the total to 30,000.
The upcoming phase will see the installation of 25,000 new street lights, further expanding the reach of the project. The Regional Coordinating Council is working closely with a private company to implement the project, which will focus on key areas such as major highways and intersections.
One of the key areas targeted for improvement is the Tema Motorway, where a pilot project will be launched. The pilot will involve the installation of solar-powered street lights from Shiashie through to Accra Central, covering a significant stretch of the motorway.
In addition to the Tema Motorway, other areas identified for improvement include the N1 highway from Weija Gbawe to Achimota, as well as key intersections such as the Overhead and the Forestry Commission. The project will also extend to areas around GIMPA and Fiesta Royale.
The use of solar-powered street lights is an innovative approach, harnessing renewable energy to provide a sustainable solution to the region’s lighting needs. This approach also reduces the financial burden on the government and minimizes the environmental impact of the project.
