Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam, Minister of Finance, has apologized to Ghanaians for the difficulties they face due to the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP).
His apology follows advice from Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong and Obuasi West MP Kwaku Kwarteng to acknowledge mistakes and show remorse.
At a town hall meeting in Accra on August 6, 2024, Dr. Adam explained that the DDEP was an International Monetary Fund (IMF) requirement, aimed at restructuring debt for economic recovery.
He emphasized that the government never intended to impose hardships and appreciated Ghanaians’ support.
“We restructured our debts to meet IMF requirements, achieving 95% participation in the DDEP,” Dr. Adam said. “I appeal to Ghanaians to forgive us for any hardships caused. We made necessary decisions to recover our economy, and your sacrifices have contributed to its recovery. Thank you for your efforts, and please forgive us.”
The DDEP aimed to reduce Ghana’s debt burden and improve debt sustainability.
