- The Finance Minister expressed regret for the difficulties faced by Ghanaians
- Dr. Adam thanked the public for their support and sacrifices during the DDEP
Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam, the Minister of Finance, has issued an apology to Ghanaians for the economic difficulties resulting from the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP).
This apology follows calls from figures like Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong, who advised members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to acknowledge their mistakes and seek forgiveness from the public.
At a town hall meeting in Accra on August 6, 2024, Dr. Adam clarified that the DDEP was mandated by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and was implemented to stabilize the economy.
He assured that it was never the government’s intention to cause hardship and expressed gratitude for the public’s support.
Dr. Adam highlighted that the DDEP, which achieved a 95% participation rate, was crucial for debt restructuring and economic recovery.
He stressed that avoiding the programme would have hindered the economic recovery currently underway.
The Finance Minister appealed to Ghanaians for forgiveness, acknowledging the sacrifices made during the DDEP and thanking them for their role in the economic recovery.
The programme was part of broader efforts to manage debt and enhance fiscal sustainability.
