UPDATE: UCC Vice Chancellor Dispute Resolved

- GTEC intervenes to resolve UCC Vice Chancellor appointment impasse.
- Vice Chancellor to remain in office while issues are investigated.
- Governing Council members challenge termination decision, citing lack of discussion.
- GTEC seeks peaceful resolution, reinstates Vice Chancellor pending outcome.
The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has successfully resolved the impasse between the University of Cape Coast (UCC) Council Chairman, Prof. S H Amonoo-Koafi, and the university community regarding the termination of Vice Chancellor Prof. Johnson Nyarko Boampong’s appointment.
The GTEC, the regulator of tertiary institutions in Ghana, has instructed the Vice Chancellor to remain in office while all issues surrounding his appointment are being examined with all stakeholders to ensure lasting peace on campus.
In a letter dated August 2, 2024, Prof. Ahmed Abdulai Jinapor, directed the Registrar of the University to provide all relevant documents concerning the renewal and purported termination of the Vice Chancellor’s appointment to avoid any interruption in the university’s management.
The letter also requested that all correspondence, court processes, and communiques related to the matter be forwarded to the Commission for review, ensuring a prudent handling of the situation. The University of Cape Coast has been in the news recently due to the purported termination of the Vice Chancellor’s appointment by the Council Chairman, leading to tension among the university community.
Various stakeholders have threatened to embark on protests to restore the Vice Chancellor to his post, prompting the GTEC to order his reinstatement while the matter is handled professionally. Seven members of the UCC Governing Council, calling themselves “Concerned members of UCC Governing Council,” disputed the termination of the Vice Chancellor’s appointment, stating it was not discussed at their last meeting on July 30, 2024.
These council members challenged the Council Chairman to produce minutes from the meeting to confirm his claims, further fueling the controversy. The UCC branch of the University Teachers Association (UTAG) and other institutions have also expressed their displeasure with the termination, describing it as a sole decision made by the Council Chairman.
The GTEC’s intervention aims to ensure a peaceful resolution to the impasse, allowing the university to operate freely and fairly, with the Vice Chancellor reinstated to his position until the matter is fully resolved.
