Four individuals, including three Ghanaians and a Chinese national, have been arrested by the police for their involvement in tampering with and installing meters from the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG). The suspects include Wisdom Sewlorm, an ECG agent, his employee Ernest Afatsawu, Rulian Shan, the manager of a Chinese plastic manufacturing firm, and Ali Yakubu, the sales manager of the same firm.
According to investigations, Wisdom Sewlorm obtained ECG meters for installation, but his employee Ernest Afatsawu tampered with them and sold them to the Chinese firm for GH₵1200. The tampered meters were then used by the Chinese firm to manufacture plastic bowls at their factory in Oblogo, near Weija.
The ECG has estimated the financial loss from the tampered meters to be over GH₵77,000 for the period between July and August. Paul Abariga, the Director responsible for Investigation, Prosecution, and Security at ECG, stated that the four suspects will be brought to court on Wednesday.
Abariga revealed that the ECG had received reports of meter tampering and had been investigating the issue. He explained that the suspects had been using residential meters for industrial purposes, causing significant financial losses to the ECG.
The ECG has also announced that it will terminate the contract with the contractor involved in the meter tampering scandal. Abariga assured that the ECG will continue to investigate and prosecute anyone involved in meter tampering to protect the company’s interests and prevent further financial losses.
