Nigeria: Borno Cafe Bombing Kills 16

A bomb explosion at a village cafe in Nigeria’s Borno state, a region heavily affected by Boko Haram insurgency, resulted in the deaths of sixteen people, according to police reports.

Several others were injured in the attack.

Police spokesperson Nahum Kenneth Daso announced on Thursday that the government had imposed a 24-hour curfew following the incident. This attack occurred just a week after a landmine explosion on a highway in Borno state killed seven soldiers.

Local resident Kachallah Goni reported hearing a loud blast around 1930 GMT at a popular cafe in Kawuri village, located a few kilometers from Maiduguri, the state capital.

Vigilante Mustapha Modu stated that he recovered at least 20 bodies from the scene.

Nigeria continues to grapple with severe security issues, including a prolonged Islamist insurgency in the northeast, separatist conflicts in the southeast, widespread oil theft in the Niger Delta, and kidnappings by criminal gangs.

On Thursday, thousands of Nigerians took to the streets in various cities to protest against the escalating insecurity, rising living costs, and governance challenges.
