GTEC Vows to Clarify UCC VC’s Appointment Termination Controversy

The Director-General of the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), Prof Ahmed Jinapor Abdulai, has revealed that GTEC was not informed about the termination of the University of Cape Coast (UCC) Vice-Chancellor’s appointment. Instead, GTEC learned about the development through social media, Prof Abdulai disclosed.

The termination of Prof Johnson Nyarko Boampong’s appointment as Vice-Chancellor was made by the Governing Council of UCC. However, the decision has been met with resistance from the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), UCC Branch, which has refused to recognize the termination.

UTAG-UCC contends that the decision was made unilaterally by the Chairman of the university’s Governing Council and lacks legitimacy. Some concerned members of the University Council have also expressed opposition to the decision.

Prof Abdulai emphasized that GTEC is working to resolve the issue and has sent a copy of the termination letter to its legal department for review. He urged all parties involved to remain calm, stating that the issue is resolvable and will not escalate into a major conflict.

Prof Abdulai assured that GTEC will release a statement on the matter as soon as possible, and the Minister of Education is actively working to resolve the situation. The development has sparked concerns about the governance and leadership of UCC, with many calling for clarity and resolution to the impasse.
