Finance Minister Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam announced that the government has invested more than GH¢10 billion in road infrastructure development since January 2024.
Dr. Adam highlighted that the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia administration has made significant investments in road networks, railways, and air transport infrastructure since 2017 to enhance domestic trade and ensure the efficient movement of goods and services.
He shared this update during the unveiling of 2,240 units of earth-moving equipment and ancillary tools for the 261 Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) at a ceremony in Accra on Wednesday.
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo officiated the event, which took place at the Black Star Square in Accra.
This equipment distribution is part of the District Road Network Improvement Programme (DRIP), aimed at enhancing road conditions nationwide. Dr. Amin Adam described the DRIP initiative as a major advancement in the government’s ongoing efforts to improve road infrastructure in Ghana.
“The road network is the backbone of our economy, connecting communities, facilitating trade, and ensuring that essential services reach every part of our country,” Dr. Adam emphasized.
He further stated that the DRIP-2024 initiative demonstrates the Government’s dedication to building a more connected and prosperous future for all citizens. The programme is set to enhance road quality and safety, generate job opportunities, stimulate local economies, and support the overall development of local assemblies.
“With our investments in infrastructure, we are laying the groundwork for sustained economic growth and social advancement,” Dr. Adam added.
In total, 2,240 units of earth-moving equipment—including bulldozers, rollers, graders, tipper trucks, and water tankers—were distributed to the 261 MMDAs for road construction, upgrading, and rehabilitation. This initiative is expected to create around 10,000 jobs for auto mechanics, operators, technicians, and drivers nationwide.
The initiative is overseen by the Ministry of Local Government, Decentralisation and Rural Development, in collaboration with the Ministries of Roads and Highways, Finance, and the District Assemblies Common Fund.
Minister of Local Government, Decentralisation and Rural Development, Mr. Martin Adjei-Mensah Korsah, described the distribution of road equipment as unprecedented in the country’s history.
“This represents the largest effort ever to empower MMDAs for the timely and effective maintenance of roads within their jurisdictions,” Mr. Korsah stated.
He expressed confidence that the new equipment and tools would enhance road conditions in both rural and urban areas, thereby improving the mobility of goods and services.
The Minister emphasized the importance of a robust road network for socio-economic activities, deepening trade, and accessing basic services.
A strict monitoring and compliance mechanism has been established to ensure the proper use of the equipment and prevent misuse, with a call for cooperation among the partner institutions to ensure effective utilization and management.
