Dampare Urges Public Support in Fight Against Disinformation
- Disinformation and misinformation are serious threats to national security
- The public should support the police in their efforts to combat false information
- A collective mindset shift is needed to address this growing problem
Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, the Inspector-General of Police, has called on the public to back law enforcement efforts aimed at tackling disinformation and misinformation.
He emphasized that addressing these issues demands a unified effort from all sectors of society.
In his address at a summit hosted by the Ghana Report, IGP Dampare highlighted the serious threat that disinformation and misinformation pose to national security and social cohesion.
He urged that these threats be recognized as significant risks to the state, requiring decisive action.
“Disinformation and misinformation are clear national security threats and must be addressed from that standpoint. We must leave this event committed to making a difference against these threats that jeopardize our nation’s security,” Dampare stated.
He expressed concern over the tendency for some members of the public to oppose law enforcement actions against individuals spreading false information. “What do we want for ourselves as a society? Do we want to support the right or the wrong? We must make a choice and engage everyone in combating disinformation and misinformation.”
IGP Dampare further emphasized the need for a shift in mindset, criticizing the current attitude that finds satisfaction in the misfortunes of others.
“It is time for a change in perspective. We have become so desensitized to each other’s suffering that we often derive joy from others’ pain. We must strive for a more compassionate and supportive society.”
