The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has reinstated its Central Regional Chairman, Prof. Richard Asiedu, after a month-long suspension. The suspension was imposed due to anti-party conduct, but Prof. Asiedu has now been cleared to resume his duties as Regional Chairman.
A statement issued by the party on Friday, August 2, announced the reinstatement, citing the expiration of the one-month suspension period. The statement, signed by NDC Chairman Fiifi Fiavi Kwetey, noted that Prof. Asiedu’s conduct will be closely monitored to ensure he does not jeopardize the party’s chances in the region.
Prof. Asiedu’s suspension followed a meeting on July 2, 2024, regarding the withdrawal of the Assin Central parliamentary candidate, Shaibu Migyimah, over an alleged amorous relationship with the wife of the constituency General Secretary, Sadique Broni. The National Disciplinary Committee submitted its report and recommendations on Prof. Asiedu’s suspension, highlighting his admission of guilt, show of remorse, and promise to avoid future anti-party behavior.
The Functional Executive Committee (FEC) deliberated on the report and decided to reinstate Prof. Asiedu, citing the importance of cohesion and unity in the party. FEC warned Prof. Asiedu that his conduct will be closely watched to ensure it does not harm the party’s chances in the region ahead of the December 7 elections.
Prof. Asiedu has been requested to meet with FEC at its next meeting for further interactions. The reinstatement is seen as a move to strengthen the party’s chances in the Central Region ahead of the upcoming elections.
