Mahama Promises to Ban Mining in Forest Reserves if Elected

John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has pledged to end mining activities in Ghana’s forest reserves if elected president in the December 7 elections.

During a meeting with chiefs and elders from the Central Region, Mahama emphasized the importance of protecting Ghana’s forests.

He condemned the practice of gold mining in these protected areas, stressing that such actions lead to environmental degradation.

Mahama argued that the destruction of forest reserves for gold mining is unacceptable, highlighting the historical significance of these forests. “Many of these trees are centuries old, and our ancestors preserved them for future generations,” he said. “We must not destroy them now for short-term gains. If we continue, we risk leaving a legacy of environmental ruin, such as desertification and savannah.”

He reassured the public that under his leadership, his government would enforce a ban on all mining activities in forest reserves to ensure their preservation for future generations.
