The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has announced the schedule for the 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections, with nominations opening on Monday, September 9, and closing on Friday, September 13. This announcement, detailed in a press release on Thursday, August 1, aligns with Regulations 6, 7, and 9 of the 2020 Public Elections Regulations (C.I. 127), which govern the nomination process for the elections.
Candidates interested in running for office can download nomination forms from the EC’s official website starting Friday, August 2. The nomination forms will be accepted daily from 9:00 am to 12:00 noon and from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm during the nomination period. For presidential candidates, the filing fee is set at GH¢100,000, though female candidates and those with disabilities will benefit from a reduced fee of GH¢75,000. Similarly, parliamentary candidates face a filing fee of GH¢10,000, with a reduced fee of GH¢7,500 for female candidates and persons with disabilities.
Payments for the nomination fees must be made via Banker’s draft addressed to the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission. For presidential candidates, the fee is GH¢100,000, while female candidates and those with disabilities are required to pay GH¢75,000. Parliamentary candidates must pay GH¢10,000, with a reduced fee of GH¢7,500 for female candidates and those with disabilities. The payments should be submitted to the Returning Officer of the respective constituency for parliamentary candidates.
The EC’s press release also clarifies that any issues or inquiries related to presidential elections should be directed to the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission. In contrast, concerns regarding parliamentary elections should be addressed to the Returning Officers of the respective constituencies. This guidance ensures that the process is smooth and that all queries are handled efficiently.
This structured nomination process is designed to ensure transparency and accessibility, promoting a diverse range of candidates for both presidential and parliamentary positions. As the nomination period approaches, the EC aims to facilitate a fair and orderly election process, contributing to the integrity of Ghana’s democratic system.
