Tiffany Haddish Defends Zimbabwe Supermarket Video Amid Backlash
American comedian Tiffany Haddish has addressed criticism over a TikTok video featuring her visit to a supermarket in Harare, Zimbabwe. The video, which shows Haddish marveling at the size and variety of the grocery store, has sparked backlash from some Zimbabweans who perceived it as a reflection of ignorance about Africa.
In the video, which has garnered over 200,000 views, Haddish is seen commenting on the store’s extensive selection, including soft drinks, frozen meat, and fresh fruit. “Look at this grocery store. It’s humungous, in Africa,” she exclaims, astonished by the modern amenities available.
Critics on social media expressed their discontent, accusing Haddish of perpetuating outdated stereotypes about Africa. One user on X (formerly Twitter) wrote, “How ignorant could she be? Did she think that Africans shop from rocks? She needs to travel more and unclog her sadly colonized view of the world. Yikes.” Another remarked, “They think we’re chasing lions and zebras,” while a third pointed out that Americans often have a “misguided perception of Africa,” assuming its inhabitants live in primitive conditions and lack modern conveniences.
In response, Haddish defended her video on X, explaining that her previous understanding of Africa was shaped by misconceptions. “I am an American, a Black one at that, and was told for years that people are starving in Africa, shown pictures of babies with flies on them,” she wrote. She described her experience as a revelation, stating that her visit to Zimbabwe has helped her uncover the true state of the continent. “I thought I would share cause I know people in the USA that believe Africans don’t have anything,” Haddish added.
Supporters of Haddish have come forward, expressing appreciation for her positive depiction of African modernity. “We like that you like our grocery store and all the products that shocked you are just basics here as well. We really aren’t in the forest hanging on trees,” one supporter commented.
Haddish, who is half-Eritrean, first visited Eritrea in 2018 and has previously praised long-time ruler Isaias Afwerki, despite criticisms of his leadership.
