NHIA Introduces Annual Free Health Check-Up Program

The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has unveiled its new annual free health check-up initiative, signaling a shift towards preventive healthcare.

This program allows Ghanaians to access a wide range of health services at no cost by simply presenting their Ghana Card.

The first phase of the initiative includes comprehensive health screenings such as blood pressure monitoring, blood sugar testing, body mass index assessments, and counseling. Necessary referrals for additional treatment will also be provided.

At the launch, NHIA CEO Dr. Dacosta Aboagye outlined the initiative’s goals and features, emphasizing its role in addressing the rise of non-communicable diseases like fibroids, hypertension, and diabetes. Dr. Aboagye highlighted that this initiative aims to reduce the incidence of these conditions through early detection and intervention.

“This program is part of our ongoing efforts to enhance the health and wellness of Ghanaians and to prevent diseases,” Dr. Aboagye stated.

He noted that preventive healthcare is gaining recognition globally, and early intervention can significantly improve health outcomes and quality of life.

The free annual health check-up program will offer a variety of services, including health screenings, blood pressure and blood sugar testing, body mass index assessments, e-meds, counseling, and referrals.

Open to all citizens under the National Health Insurance Scheme with a Ghana Card, the program also focuses on educating the public about healthy lifestyles and preventive measures. Dr. Aboagye encouraged citizens to utilize this free service during their birth month.

Dr. Patrick Kuma Aboagye, Director-General of Ghana Health Services, presented data underscoring the need for a preventive approach.

He reported that in 2019, non-communicable diseases accounted for 74% of global health-related deaths, with a significant number occurring in low- and middle-income countries like Ghana.

“This data highlights the urgent need for a shift in our approach to health,” Dr. Aboagye remarked. “Our wellness program is designed to increase access to screenings, detect risk factors early, and promote healthy lifestyles.”

NHIA Board Chairman Dr. Ernest Kwarko praised the contributors to the initiative and affirmed the NHIA’s commitment to improving healthcare in Ghana through innovative approaches.
