John Dramani Mahama, the 2024 flagbearer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has leveled criticism against Godfred Dame, the Minister of Justice and Attorney-General.
Mahama alleged that Dame is acting more like a legal advocate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) rather than performing his duties impartially as Attorney-General.
In an interview with TV3 on Tuesday, July 30, following the Court of Appeal’s decision to acquit and discharge the accused in the ambulance procurement case, Mahama remarked that Dame’s actions have significantly damaged his credibility.
John Dramani Mahama criticized Attorney-General Godfred Dame for alleged misconduct, referring to a leaked phone conversation between Dame and Richard Jakpa, one of the former accused. In the conversation, Dame is accused of attempting to manipulate witnesses to imprison the Minority Leader.
Mahama vowed that, if elected, his administration would refocus the Office of the Attorney-General on accountability rather than pursuing political vendettas. He expressed deep concern over the current Attorney-General’s actions and pledged to restore integrity and impartiality to the justice system if he returns to office.
Mahama stated, “This Attorney-General has been thoroughly discredited. Given the evidence of witness coaching and other misconduct, this prosecution would have been dismissed as malicious anywhere else in the world.”
John Dramani Mahama criticized the Attorney-General’s handling of prosecutions, calling them malicious. He noted that the Attorney-General seems less vigorous in pursuing other significant cases, such as an ongoing ambulance procurement scandal involving the current administration, which he said is far more substantial than the case being prosecuted.
Mahama accused the Attorney-General of acting as a legal advocate for the NPP, showing excessive enthusiasm in targeting political opponents. He promised that his administration would reverse this approach, focusing on accountability for the outgoing regime while also ensuring that any members of his own party involved in similar misconduct would be prosecuted.
John Dramani Mahama remarked, “The Attorney-General seems to overlook that he also holds the position of Minister of Justice. As Minister of Justice, his role is to ensure fairness. In any other part of the world, a case like this would have been dismissed long ago and would never have even reached the courtroom.”
