John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has asserted that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo does not have the authority to decide who he will hand over power to after the general elections.
Speaking to the Central Regional House of Chiefs on Tuesday, July 30, where he introduced his running mate, Mahama emphasized that the decision on who assumes power lies with the electorate, not the outgoing president. He stated, “Tell President Akufo-Addo that it is not his place to decide who he will hand over to. He should simply promise that whoever wins the election, he will transfer power to them. If the people of Ghana choose John Mahama and elect me, he will have no choice but to hand over to me.”
This statement came in response to President Akufo-Addo’s remarks suggesting he might be unwilling to hand over power to someone he has defeated in previous elections. President Akufo-Addo had expressed this sentiment during a mini rally in Doboro in the Greater Accra region after visiting Blue Skies Limited. He also urged those who had not yet registered to do so, emphasizing the importance of voting.

In his remarks, President Akufo-Addo urged supporters to vote for Dr. Bamwua, highlighting his confidence in Dr. Bamwua’s ability to continue the work he has started. “I cannot hand over to someone I have defeated twice, especially someone who is dissatisfied with everything I do and might dismantle the progress we have made. Vote for Dr. Bamwua, with whom I have worked for the past seven and a half years. I trust him to continue the good work we’ve begun,” he said.
