The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) has expressed concerns about possible unrest following the Ministry of Health’s recent announcement of financial clearance for 15,200 nurses and midwives who qualified between 2020 and 2024.
In an exclusive interview with our labor correspondent Daniel Opoku in Accra on July 30, GRNMA President Perpetual Ofori Ampofo highlighted the rising tensions among healthcare professionals.
The announcement has left many unclear about which specific group the financial clearance pertains to, especially since around 40,000 nurses and midwives from 2021 onward are still waiting for their clearance.
Mrs. Ofori Ampofo fears that discontent could escalate next week, noting that while it may not personally affect her, it will have significant repercussions for the government, the Ministry of Health, and the Ministry of Finance.
She explained, “If someone is waiting for employment and learns that financial clearance has been issued, but only to previous batches while the current ones remain unaddressed, this could lead to problems.”
She has urged the Ministries of Finance and Health to arrange additional financial clearance for the remaining nurses and midwives.
“My primary concern as GRNMA President is to ensure that all qualified nurses and midwives are employed and able to practice their profession,” Mrs. Ofori Ampofo emphasized.
She concluded, “While the clearance itself is a positive development, the way it is being applied may present challenges, according to the latest communication from the Ministry of Health.”
