Renowned songstress Mzbel has raised alarms about the increasing prevalence of cyberbullying and the misuse of social media platforms.
In a recent statement, Mzbel shared her personal experiences with online harassment, revealing that she has previously pursued legal action against media personnel and bloggers. However, she noted that these cases remained confidential due to their sensitive nature.
“I have sued media people before and taken a couple of people on, but it was not made public. They have learned their lessons and have repented. One is a journalist, and the rest are bloggers,” Mzbel disclosed.
The singer expressed concern that social media is increasingly being employed as a tool for character assassination and the dissemination of false information. “Social media is now being used as a bad weapon. Abuse on social media and cyberbullying is becoming too much. Irrespective of the calibre of people, netizens will find a way to disrespect someone,” she lamented.
Mzbel also criticized the practice of publishing unverified information for the sake of generating clicks. She condemned the tendency of some online platforms to prioritize sensationalism over accuracy.
In her call to action, Mzbel urged the government to implement stricter laws to combat cyberbullying. She emphasized the need for greater accountability and responsible behavior in the digital sphere.
