A long-standing sports commentator has been dismissed from his role at the Olympics following a sexist comment directed at the Australian women’s swimming team.
Bob Ballard, a well-known figure in sports broadcasting, made the offensive remark as the Australian team, consisting of Mollie O’Callaghan, Emma McKeon, Meg Harris, and Shayna Jack, were celebrating their gold medal win in the 4x100m freestyle relay. He described the swimmers as “finishing up” and added, “you know what women are like… hanging around, doing their make-up.”
The comment was met with immediate backlash, with fellow commentator Lizzie Simmonds labeling it “outrageous.” The clip quickly spread on social media, leading to widespread condemnation.
Eurosport, the broadcaster, swiftly responded by terminating Ballard’s contract. In a statement, the company said, “During a segment of Eurosport’s coverage last night, commentator Bob Ballard made an inappropriate comment. To that end, he has been removed from our commentary roster with immediate effect.”
Ballard, a veteran of numerous Olympics and World Championships, has yet to publicly address the incident. Swimming Australia has been contacted for comment. Sources and related content
