- The community is demanding swift and decisive action against land guards
In Mangoline, a community within the Ga South municipality of Greater Accra Region, three family members were assaulted by land guards following their refusal to pay a demanded digging fee.
Reports indicate that the assailants, identified as land guards, wielded knives during the attack, injuring the victims including a 3-year-old child. The incident has left the family deeply traumatized, prompting them to halt their building development.
Police have taken action by apprehending two suspects, though one remains at large.
Local residents, many of whom have also fallen victim to similar exploitative practices by land guards, voiced frustration over the situation. Some recounted instances where land guards demanded additional fees for roofing and tiling, exacerbating the community’s insecurity.
Expressing concern over the recurring violence, one resident stated, “Families have endured threats and physical assaults, including young children being harmed, all because of unreasonable fees imposed by these land guards. It’s unacceptable.”
Another affected resident emphasized, “This culture of intimidation and violence by land guards must end. We aspire to progress as a nation, yet we tolerate such barbaric acts. It’s disgraceful.”
The community remains vigilant against further incidents, advocating for stricter measures to curb the menace of land guards and protect residents’ rights to develop their properties without fear.
