Ghana Gas CEO Urges African Leaders to Capitalize on Russia-Ukraine War for Gas Exports
- Africa only utilizes 5-6% of its gas output
- Dr Asante emphasized Africa's opportunity to establish itself
- He identified two key factors driving global gas supply
Dr. Benjamin K.D. Asante, CEO of Ghana Gas Company, has called on African leaders to seize the opportunity presented by the Russia-Ukraine conflict to expand their gas distribution capacities and export to Europe.
Speaking at a public lecture at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Dr. Asante emphasized the need for Africa to harness its gas resources and transportation networks to fill the supply gap created by Russia’s decision to cut gas supplies to Europe.
Despite contributing 10-15% to global gas production, Africa only utilizes 5-6% of its gas output, Dr. Asante noted.
He highlighted West Africa’s strategic position to lead the continent in replacing Russian gas supplies in Europe, citing proposed pipeline transportation routes to transport excess gas to Europe.
Dr. Asante identified two key factors driving global gas supply and demand issues: the push for carbon neutrality and low-carbon emission generation, and the impact of the Russia-Ukraine war.
He emphasized Africa’s opportunity to establish itself as a reliable gas supplier to meet the resulting demand.
However, Dr. Asante acknowledged the need for Africa to address its infrastructure, technological, and tax regime challenges to achieve this initiative.
