The Tema Free Zones Enclave has witnessed the commissioning of Africa’s largest rooftop solar plant, boasting a capacity of 16.8 megawatts.
Financed by the International Finance Corporation (IFC) with a $17 million investment, the project spans an impressive one million square meters.
Helios Solar Energy, a subsidiary of LMI Holdings, owns the facility, which was constructed, connected, and installed by Ghanaian engineers and technicians.
At the commissioning ceremony, Herbert Krapa, Minister of State at the Ministry of Energy, highlighted the project’s significance, citing its socio-economic impact, creation of sustainable jobs, and contribution to Ghana’s Paris Agreement commitments.
Mr. Krapa praised the initiative, noting its potential to reduce production costs for companies within the enclave. “This project will contribute to power distribution, lower costs, and support industry in meeting its green credentials,” he stated.
Mike Aaron Oquaye Jnr, Chief Executive of the Free Zones Authority, commended the private sector’s leadership in driving environmental stewardship and aligning operations with international sustainability standards.
The project serves as a shining example of collaborative efforts towards a sustainable future.
