Two Chief Executives in the Bono Region had a harrowing experience when they were caught up in a robbery attack on the Fetentaa portion of the Berekum-Drobo highway. The incident occurred on Tuesday, July 16, 2024, between 1630 and 1700 hours, according to Mr. Andrews Bediako, the Jaman South Municipal Chief Executive.

Mr. Bediako and Mr. Solomon Owusu, the Jaman North District Chief Executive, were returning from a meeting in Sunyani to their districts when they encountered the armed robbers. The robbers, estimated to be around five in number, had targeted market women and traders returning from Drobo and Sampa to Berekum and Sunyani.

The robbers, who were fully armed, appeared from the shoulder of the stretch, firing gunshots sporadically and signaling the vehicles to stop. Mr. Bediako recounted that the robbers even hit and broke his windscreen with lumber, but they managed to speed off from the scene.

In the process of the attack, the engine of Mr. Owusu’s vehicle broke down, but fortunately, they all managed to escape the scene unhurt. The quick-thinking Chief Executives immediately rang the police and signaled all the vehicles coming from the opposite directions, sensing danger, the robbers fled into the bush.

Mr. Bediako expressed relief that they escaped unhurt, but noted that the incident highlights the need for improved security measures on the highway. The incident has raised concerns about the safety of travelers on the Berekum-Drobo highway, and authorities are urged to take swift action to address the issue.
